A locally managed endowment supports women's agricultural entrepreneurship in Malawi

A locally managed fund is helping connect philanthropy, education, and international impact through a $25,000 grant to CAMFED USA.

The Big Dog Endowment, held with the Cuero Community Foundation, awarded the grant to support women’s agricultural entrepreneurship in Malawi. The endowment is funded and maintained by Dave Sather and Carol Klages and is designed to give Texas Lutheran University students hands-on experience in real-world philanthropy.

Learning Philanthropy by Doing It

Through the Big Dog Endowment, students are able to do more than study charitable giving in the classroom. They gain experience reviewing nonprofit organizations, understanding financial stewardship, learning about board responsibilities, and considering how grant decisions can create meaningful, lasting impact.

The program gives students a closer look at how philanthropy works from the inside, including the responsibility that comes with determining how charitable resources can be used most effectively.

The grant to CAMFED USA reflects that purpose by connecting students with an organization working to expand opportunity and entrepreneurship for women in Malawi.

Local Giving With a Broader Range

The Big Dog Endowment is structured as a donor-advised fund through the Cuero Community Foundation.

A donor-advised fund allows charitable resources to be held and managed through a sponsoring organization while donors or fund advisers recommend grants to nonprofit organizations over time. For individuals, families, and organizations, it can provide a flexible way to support causes that reflect their values.

In this case, the structure brings together local donors, Texas Lutheran University students, the Cuero Community Foundation, Sather Financial Group, and CAMFED USA around a shared goal.

While the fund is managed locally, its impact can extend far beyond the immediate community.

Supporting Entrepreneurship and Opportunity

CAMFED USA’s work in Malawi gives students a real-world example of how strategic charitable giving can support entrepreneurship, opportunity, and long-term change.

The $25,000 grant helps illustrate how philanthropy can serve more than one purpose at a time: supporting important work while also giving students practical experience in leadership, nonprofit evaluation, and responsible grantmaking.

For the Cuero Community Foundation, the Big Dog Endowment also demonstrates the role a community foundation can play in helping donors organize, sustain, and direct charitable giving with care.

A Partnership Built Around Purpose

The Cuero Community Foundation recognizes Dave Sather and Carol Klages for their continued investment in student learning and sustainable philanthropy, along with Sather Financial Group, Texas Lutheran University students, and CAMFED USA for their roles in making the grant possible.

The Big Dog Endowment is an example of how local generosity can create opportunities for learning while supporting meaningful work far beyond Cuero.
